If your child:
• Has trouble staying on task
• Makes careless errors repeatedly
• Is easily distracted
• Has difficulty sounding out words
• Reverse letters or words
• Has problems creating a mental picture
• Forget instructions
• Has trouble understanding what is read
• Is slow to complete a task
• Has problems handling a complex task
If this sounds like your child, simply let us detect and solve the specific underlying problems so that your child can experience a lifetime of faster, easier learning.
Contemporary educational research shows that the ROOT cause of most learning struggles is not lack of motivation or tuition, but rather specific weaknesses in cognitive skills.
Attack Root Causes of Learning Problems
Processing and Cognitive Enhancement (PACE) - Cognitive skills are the most essential, but often overlooked fundamental tools of effective learning. They are the underlying mental mechanism that process incoming information and enable understanding and problem-solving. Weak cognitive skills result in a diminished capacity to learn.
Science has continued to confirm that cognitive skills can be developed and strengthened through intense, focused training. At SBDC, we have developed scientific programmes and exercises that specialise in identifying and strengthening weak cognitive skills.
Cognitive skills are not study skills, but inborn underlying mental skills. They are the foundations of learning. These include:
| 1. |
Auditory processing – the ability to discern sound codes, critical for listening or comprehension |
| 2. |
Attention skills – the ability to sustain, divide and select information |
| 3. |
Logic and Reasoning – the ability to deduce a soluton given a set of problems |
| 4. |
Visual processing – the ability to maniplate objects, pictures and images in space |
| 5. |
Working Memory – the ability to retain, recall and apply learned knowledge |
| 6. |
Processing Speed – the speed of processing any given input task and perform the output |
A weakness in learning ability is simply due to a weakness in one or more of these six specific cognitive skills. If someone is weak in just one of them, his learning ability suffers, which in turn limits his academic progress.
As a child progresses in his academic learning, progressively stronger underlying cognitive skills are required to sustain ease of learning. While cognitive skills develop naturally in the background, some develop slower than others.
The problem arises when one or more of the six cognitive skills do not develop fast enough to handle the level of academic learning.
This severely limits academic progress, resulting in symptoms like constant academic struggles and loss of motivation for studies.
Once strengthened, these skills not only enhance the student's capacity to learn, but also lead to
• a natural increase in confidence,
• an improvement in self-esteem,
• internal self-motivation, &
• lifetime potential for achievement.
